Aircon Remote Control Symbols Explained

A plain-language guide to every button and symbol on your aircon remote — mode, fan speed, sleep, timer, and more.

The Mode Button: Cool, Dry, Fan, Heat, Auto

The mode button cycles through the operating modes of your unit. Cool mode is the standard setting — the compressor runs to lower temperature. Dry mode reduces humidity with minimal cooling, ideal for rainy season days when the room feels damp but not hot. Fan-only mode circulates air without any cooling, useful when outside temperatures are pleasant.

Heat mode is included on reverse-cycle units and is rarely used in the Philippines except in Baguio during cold December nights. Auto mode lets the unit decide whether to cool or heat based on the current room temperature versus the set temperature — a convenient but less precise option that most users eventually abandon in favor of manual Cool mode.

Fan Speed, Swing, and Louver Controls

Fan speed buttons are typically labeled 1, 2, 3 or Low, Med, High. Lower speeds are quieter and remove more humidity per volume of air processed. Higher speeds cool the room faster but can feel drafty and are less effective at dehumidification. Auto fan speed adjusts based on how far the room temperature is from the target.

The Swing or Louver button controls the direction of the airflow. Vertical swing oscillates the horizontal louver up and down, distributing cool air across the room rather than blowing it in one direction. Some units also have a horizontal louver controlled by a separate button for left-right distribution. For bedrooms, directing airflow toward the ceiling rather than directly at sleepers is recommended for comfort and to avoid dry eyes and throat.

Sleep Mode, Timer, and Turbo

Sleep mode — sometimes shown as a moon icon — gradually raises the set temperature by 0.5°C every 30 minutes after activation. This mimics the body's natural preference for a slightly warmer sleeping environment as the night progresses and reduces electricity consumption during sleeping hours. Most people find sleep mode more comfortable than a fixed cold temperature throughout the night.

The Timer function lets you set the unit to turn on or off after a fixed number of hours. Using the off-timer to shut the unit down 30 minutes before your usual wake time is an easy way to reduce electricity use without any comfort impact. Turbo or Powerful mode runs the compressor and fan at maximum capacity for a set period — typically 15–30 minutes — to cool the room rapidly on entering, after which the unit returns to normal operation.
