Noisy Aircon

Rattling, banging, or grinding noises from your aircon are not normal. Different sounds point to different problems — identifying the sound is the first step.

4 Common Causes

Common Causes

1

Loose Parts and Panels

Vibration from years of operation loosens screws, panels, and brackets. In the Philippines, typhoon-force winds can shift outdoor units. Rattling noises are typically caused by loose plastic panels or mounting brackets.

2

Fan Motor Issues

A worn fan motor bearing produces a grinding or squealing sound. Debris (leaves, insects) caught in the fan blade causes a loud clicking or thumping. Both indoor and outdoor fan motors can develop this issue.

3

Compressor Noise

A banging or clanking sound from the outdoor unit usually means the compressor mounting bolts have loosened or internal compressor components are failing. This requires professional attention.

4

Debris and Foreign Objects

During typhoon season, small debris — twigs, leaves, even lizards — can enter the outdoor unit. A loud initial bang followed by clicking usually means something is caught in the fan.

DIY Fixes — Step by Step

  1. 1

Tighten all visible screws and panels

Turn off the unit. Gently press on all panels to find which one is loose. Tighten screws with a screwdriver. Use rubber washers on vibrating panels to dampen noise.

  2. 2

Inspect and clean the outdoor unit

Turn off power at the breaker. Visually inspect the outdoor unit fan blade for debris. Use a flashlight to look inside the grille. Remove any visible foreign objects with gloved hands.

  3. 3

Check that the outdoor unit is level

A tilted outdoor unit causes the compressor to work harder and vibrate more. Place a level on top of the unit. Adjust the mounting feet or shim the bracket if needed.

  4. 4

Listen carefully to identify the noise source

Rattling = loose panel. Clicking = debris in fan. Grinding = worn bearing. Hissing = refrigerant leak. Banging = compressor issue. Identifying the type helps you or the technician fix it faster.

When to Call a Professional

  • Banging or clanking comes from the compressor (outdoor unit)
  • Grinding noise that does not stop after clearing debris
  • The unit vibrates excessively and shakes the wall bracket
  • You hear a hissing or bubbling sound (refrigerant leak)
  • Noise started after a typhoon — structural inspection needed

Estimated Repair Costs (Philippines)

Minor tightening and cleaning: ₱300–₱500. Fan motor replacement: ₱1,500–₱4,000. Compressor bracket repair: ₱500–₱1,500.
