Aircon Tripping Breaker

An aircon that repeatedly trips the circuit breaker is a safety and electrical concern. In the Philippines, this often worsens during summer when multiple appliances run simultaneously.

4 Common Causes

Common Causes

1

Short Circuit in the Unit

Damaged wiring insulation caused by pests (rats chewing wires are common in Philippine homes) or age can cause a short circuit. The breaker trips to prevent a fire or further damage.

2

Overloaded Circuit

Many Philippine homes share a single circuit for multiple large appliances. Running an aircon, refrigerator, and washing machine on the same circuit during summer overloads it. The breaker is doing its job.

3

Failing Compressor

A compressor that is struggling to start draws an enormous inrush current — sometimes 5–7x normal operating current. This spike trips the breaker. You will notice the breaker trips within seconds of the aircon starting.

4

Faulty Wiring or Loose Connections

Loose terminal connections at the unit, the wall outlet, or the breaker panel cause resistance heating and arcing. This is a fire hazard. Wiring faults are common in older Philippine homes with aging electrical infrastructure.

DIY Fixes — Step by Step

  1. 1

Identify what else is on the same circuit

Check your electrical panel to see which outlets and lights share the same breaker as your aircon. Unplug other heavy appliances from that circuit before running the aircon to test if overloading is the cause.

  2. 2

Inspect the power cord and plug

Look for burn marks, fraying, or heat discoloration on the power cord and wall outlet. If you see any damage, do not use the unit. Replace the damaged component before operating.

  3. 3

Check that the breaker is correctly rated

A 1HP aircon typically requires a 15–20A dedicated breaker. A 1.5HP requires 20A. If the breaker rating is lower than required, it will trip under normal load. Check the aircon nameplate for amperage requirements.

  4. 4

    Perform a clean start test

Turn off all other appliances. Reset the breaker. Start only the aircon. If it still trips, the problem is in the unit itself, not the circuit. Do not keep resetting — call a technician.

When to Call a Professional

  • The breaker trips within seconds of the aircon starting (compressor issue)
  • You smell burning when the breaker trips
  • The breaker feels hot to the touch
  • The outlet or plug shows burn marks
  • Tripping happens even on a dedicated circuit — internal wiring fault
  • Your home has aluminum wiring (common in older Philippine subdivisions) — requires specialist evaluation

Estimated Repair Costs (Philippines)

Dedicated circuit installation: ₱2,000–₱6,000. Wiring repair: ₱500–₱2,000. Compressor replacement: ₱5,000–₱15,000.
